Tracey and I made this short “buddy film” as part of the 48 Hour Film Project 2010, in Tampa. The 48 Hour Film Project is the largest international film competition in the world. The project is a wild and sleepless weekend in which you make a movie—write, shoot, edit and score it—in just 48 hours. We have made several shot films for the competition and have done well in the past winning several awards. As an artist it is hard to be subjective about your work but I think the team (Leftover Films) really came together this year and we made something we are all very proud of. Tracey directed it and I produced, shot and edited the film.

On Friday night July 16th, we got a character, a prop, a line of dialogue and a genre, all to include in our movie. 48 hours later, the movie must be complete. Then it was shown at Channelside along with the other teams on Wednesday. 27 teams competed and 20 teams turned in a their film on time! Just finishing your movie is an accomplishment..phew!

Here are the elements we had to include:
Genre “Buddy Film”
Character – Diego or Dolores Florio, Tourism Worker
Line of Dialog “That’s not what I meant”
Prop – Bathing Suit

We got help from the very talented Khaled and Mariana of Kismis Ink as well as Erica and Katelyn from Occasions. My old friend Natalie Campisi, a working writer, came up with a brilliant script and we got an amazing composer Travis Abel at of Seattle who stayed up all night in Seattle scoring our rough cut.

The 48 Hour Film Project is a wild and sleepless weekend in which Tracey , myself and an ultra creative team we are putting together – will make a movie—write, shoot, edit and score it—in just 48 hours. We sat out last years competition in Tampa but just like Randy Jackson always says, “We are definitely in it to win it!” The contest is from July 16th – July 18th. Our team name is Leftover Films.

Here’s how it works. On Friday night,we pick a random genre out of a hat then we get a character, a prop, and a line of dialogue all to be included in our movie. 48 hours later, the movie must be complete. Then it will show at a Channelside the next week. Stay tuned for show times as unlike the summer blockbuster you only get one chance to see our movie!

In 2009, nearly 40,000 filmmakers made 3,000 films in in 76 cities. They claim it is the largest international film competition. Many films have even been shown at the Cannes Film Festival.

If you follow the blog then stay tuned to follow all the wild and wacky details of this ultra creative pressure cooker we like to put ourselves into. In the meantime if you are Facebooker like we are then stop by and say, “Hi!” Leftover Films Facebook

Each year the festival has grown as a result of Monica and her staff’s hard work. This year at opening night the screened the Audience Award winning film of the Sundance Film Festival “Happythankyoumoreplease,” directed by 1st time director Josh Radnor of one of Tracey and my favorite shows, “How I Met Your Mother.” The festival is a blast and continues today with a host of great films as well as the closing ceremonies tomorrow, with the winners announced and a huge party! We will post a short film of the festivites soon, so stay tuned!

It has been a while since our last post but we just got back from Channelside for the World Premiere of Leftover Films‘ (Tampa Wonderworks sister company) “Food For Love.” Which was written, shot, and edited during the 48 Hour Film Project July 18th-20th in Tampa. It was a long sleepless fun filled weekend that produced our best film yet.

The screening went very well. In group A there were 14 films shown and Food For Love played very well. There were plenty of laughs throughout the whole film. We are up against some tough competition but I like our chances of winning. The awards will be announced at the awards party August 8th at 7pm at Nova 535 Art Lounge in St. Petersburg.

We were given a random genre and then each team was given the same elements to make their films.
Genre: “Holiday Film”
Prop: “Hair Dryer”
Character: “Bob or Barbara Percival, Food Connoisseur”
Line of Dialog: “How could you do this to me?”

Check out the film!

We have been very busy lately producing and editing some of our best work to date. We have also been working hard with Tampa Wonderworks’ sister company, Leftover Films as we put our team together for this year’s48 Hour Film Project

The 48 Hour Film Project is the largest international film competition. This is Tampa’s second year in the competition and Leftover will be competing again. Last year we took home “best use of character” and “best graphics” honors with out film “Last Chance.” This year we are looking to win and have a chance at international distribution. Some of Last Years winning films were even shown at Cannes!

<img src="http://www.48hourfilm.com/badges/48hfp_tampa-stpetersburg_2008_oval_l.png"

On Friday July 18th at 7pm we meet at the kickoff party being held at Limey’s Pub(if you join us I may even buy you a beer!) ourselves and 23 other teams are given a random genre, line of dialog, prop, and character and charged with the task of creating a 4 – 7 min film in 48 Hours. On Wednesday July 23 all films (that finish) will be screened at Channelside Cinemas in Downtown Tampa.

This year we have a phenomenal director in Ben Eytalis
a talented, well rounded shooter, editor, writer, producer at Channel 8 in Tampa. Ben was influential in our story idea for last years film as well as our DP on “Absent” our entry into ’06’s National Film Challenge. Joe Bamford another freelance talent out of the Bay Area will be our DP and its his 1st time joining the Leftover Crew and we are very excited to have him.

We have some other great crew members including writer John Statton and musician Rob Rose as well as some phenomenal talent! We have cast Jaclyn Jardine, Danielle Laughlin, Johanne Maurasse, Elizabeth Hentschl, Doug Landin, Austin Ventura, Paakow Arku, Jean Paul Reymont and Jeni Perillo.

Check back soon for more updates!
